Local SEO: How to Become Easier to Find in Your City

Local SEO guide: optimise Google Business Profile, collect reviews, and reach customers searching in your city.

If you run a local business and you are not a technical expert, improving your visibility on Google is often more manageable than it looks. Local SEO is still one of the most underestimated levers for businesses that work in a specific area.

If They Can't Find You, It's As If You Don't Exist

A quick test: search from your phone for your service together with your city (for example "plumber Viareggio" or "seafood restaurant Lucca").

A search that specific often signals a concrete need. Appearing with clear, current information helps the person decide whether you are the right fit before contacting you.

Google documents three main factors: relevance (how well the profile matches the search), distance (how far the business is from the searcher), and prominence (how well known the business is). Content and profile work cannot change physical distance, but they can make information about the business clearer and more authoritative.

1. Google Business Profile: Your Digital Storefront

What used to be called Google My Business is now a central part of local visibility. It is not just a map listing: it collects the information people use before calling, visiting a website or asking for directions.

  • Completeness: fill in every relevant field. Hours, services and attributes help Google match the profile to relevant searches and remove doubt for visitors.
  • Real photos: avoid glossy stock images. Post authentic photos of your team, your work, and your place. People trust what looks real.
  • Useful updates: use the "Updates" section for genuine changes, special hours, offers or news. Its first job is to keep information accurate for people.

2. Reviews: Reducing Uncertainty

Reviews are not a numbers contest: they reduce uncertainty. Focus on authentic, recent and relevant feedback without incentives or shortcuts.

How to get them without pushing:

  • Ask at the right moment, when the customer is satisfied.
  • Make it easy: a QR code that opens the review page directly, displayed in store or attached to the invoice.
  • Reply consistently: thank people for compliments and handle criticism politely, avoiding automatic or defensive responses.

3. Keywords: Use the Words Your Customers Use

On your website, don't just write "Lawyer": be specific, for example "divorce lawyer in Pisa". Google needs to understand what you do and where you do it.

Create a dedicated page only when you can offer genuinely useful, distinct information for that area: services, logistics, examples, and local questions. Copying the same page and changing the city name helps neither readers nor the quality of the site.

4. Citations: Consistency Pays Off

Make sure your Name, Address, and Phone (NAP) are identical everywhere: website, Google, social profiles, category directories. If on Google you are "Sports Bar" and on social "Sports Bar by Mario Rossi", the data becomes inconsistent and visibility can suffer. Here precision pays over time.
